Player Poll - Location

Hey there, gentlebeings. Livejournal Release 89 and the "Classic" comments feature have been live for a week now, so as promised, we're getting a poll out here so you can vote on options for Fandom High's location.

We'll leave this poll open until 11:59 PST on Saturday the 10th, so you don't need to vote right away. You've still got a week to test out the LJ updates before making a decision.

Aside from the expected Livejournal or Dreamwidth choice, we've also offered a "let's wait" option, for those who don't feel ready to decide one way or the other, and the ever popular "None of the above; I'll tell you my suggestion in the comments."

You can vote with any one of your character journals, or even your personal journal if it's more convenient at the time; like our much-missed Harriet Jones, we know who you are. Just please only vote once! (We trust you; we just want to make sure that's clear because some OOC/IC polls, like radio broadcasters, are open to votes from multiple characters, same player.)

You can also edit your vote at any time up until the poll closes, so no need to panic if circumstances change and so does your mind; just go here to update your response.

Some LJ and Dreamwidth Stuff To Consider

Livejournal

  • Has fixed the order of the icon selector on the default comment pages so it's alphabetical by keyword again (but not the problem where it shows you icons you can't actually use, including any with more than one keyword)

  • Now offers comment-editing for all account levels

  • Now offers a Classic Comment page as an alternative to the default

  • Classic Comments are currently only available for Minimalism layouts; we don't know if that will expand to other styles

  • Classic Comments currently don't work for basic accounts; that's a bug they've said will be fixed, but we don't know when

  • Using Classic Comments currently turns off any custom CSS (so no header pictures, no changing the width of the sidebar, etc.); we don't know if they'll fix that

  • Classic Comments also have the additional bugs listed here, which have been acknowledged, but we don't know when they'll be fixed

Dreamwidth

  • Offers comment-editing only for paid/premium accounts

  • Has no Plus option, but free users get 15 userpics (compared to LJ's 6)

  • Now offers importing for both journals and communities, basic as well as paid

  • Now offers the chance to "claim" imported LJ comments by tying them to a Dreamwidth journal, which means that userpics in old posts will show up

  • Currently has a maximum of 250 icons, and no a la carte options; you must have a Premium Paid account to get that many, which only has 6-month or 1 year options, nothing shorter

  • However, they're actively working on adding additional userpic packages for paid and premium accounts (with some potentially nifty features for RP, which you can read more about in that post). Prices haven't been established yet, though, and we don't know when this will actually happen.

  • Can't be paid for via PayPal, which can be a hassle for international users.

We're not trying to influence y'all in either direction; obviously both of those options each have their drawbacks and benefits, nor did we come anywhere near listing them all. (There are more described here in the Open Forum, though some of those have been improved by the updates mentioned above.) We just want to make sure you have as much information as possible to work from.

Re: Questions

I'm kind of wondering how this poll is going to work when it comes to counting. Looking at the possible answers, the first and third answer in a way stand against the second answer. While people in the first answer don't want to move, the third answer are people who at this point don't want to move with the current information they have.

So, what happens if the second answer has the most votes, but the sum of the first and third answer is actually more? Does the second answer weigh through or will that sum thing balance it (with possibly another vote later depending on the ratio between those answers)?

Hopefully the results won't leave us in an ambiguous position like that, but if the totals come out like

Move to Dreamwidth: 10 votes
Stay on LJ: 8 votes
Wait and decide later: 7 votes

then we'd go with waiting and another vote after Release 90 to clear things up!

That makes sense to me. Thanks! I'll stop overthinking now.

Where is your OOC thread so the world does not end?

Well great. Now the Mayans are going to be right. I hope you're happy.

I just want to note that Default styles on LJ offers subthreads like they did in the old style. (I know this was my main issue with everything as it bugged me more than the loss of subjects. But that's just me.)

Did they actually fix that on the Classic comment system?

Re: General Discussion

[personal profile] nookiepowered 2012-03-02 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe? If you mean the "thread" and "parent" links, they're there in classic comments. Sadly the thing where commenting in a thread will bounce you back to the full page hasn't been fixed yet.

Re: General Discussion

[identity profile] need-no-moon.livejournal.com 2012-03-02 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant the latter, yeah. That's the most annoying thing to me.

They semi-introduced thread and parent links in the default system too. Basically when you load a subthread, the parent thread is collapsed above. You can open it and click the link and it will open the thread anew with the parent's parent collapsed. So some extra clicks, but it's there. In case anyone's wondering.

Yeah, once I figured out where to look for it (on my RL journal that I'm keeping in default so I can see what changes get made to it), that was a decent substitute for the Parent link (maybe even better in some cases).

Two thoughts, basically, and they're both based on us staying here, since that seems to be the way the wind is blowing:

1) Are we going to have a contingency plan in place, for the if/when of what happens if LJ flat-out decides it doesn't want RPers or small-F-fandom around any more? It sounds weirdly dramatic phrased like that, but the signs are there that they're trying to shape the userbase into something that we certainly aren't. I don't think it's a certainty any more that small-F-fandom will always be welcome on LJ, not the way they're aiming to be the new Facebook. It might be nice to have a hard and fast plan in place in case we wake up to bizarre new TOS rules aimed at tossing us out.

2) On a way more frivolous note, can we pool resources on layout makers that use Minimalism? I hate the look of the default, but most places I check use Flexible Squares or Smooth Sailing.

Here are a few links I found, to start, for anyone else who needs classic commenting:

The Fulcrum
Gawariel Design
Mental Helada
Spire
Unequally
Year Zeta

All Entries tagged 'Minimalism' on Minty Apple

But those each only have a few each. Also, some of [livejournal.com profile] fruitstyle's layouts are minimalism, but their tags don't sort by S2 layout so you'd have to check each individually.

Re: General Discussion

No matter which way the vote goes now, we're absolutely willing to re-examine the idea of moving in the future, if LJ becomes an environment that's actively hostile to fandom or RPing. We've got all the FH comms backed up to Dreamwidth, and we'll update those periodically anyway, just as a failsafe archive.

Unfortunately, with custom Minimalism layouts, the choice right now is "have a custom layout and use the comments that come with that layout" or "have Classic Comments and be stuck with one of the default Minimalism layouts." Once you check the box for using Classic Comments, it turns off all custom CSS, which means the pretty designs from Mintyapple and such won't show up.

That might be okay, though, if the comment style for your chosen custom design works for you, since a lot of them do have Subject lines and non-headache-inducing colors. They just won't be the old-style "Classic" comments.

1) Sorry, I figured, I just meant, it might be nice to have the emergency plan updated and ready. I don't really trust any more that things might not turn on a dime. We didn't get much warning for the comment clusterfuck; whatever hits next might be out of the blue, too.

It's sad that I'm expecting it to be a "when" and not an "if" at this point. :\

2) Fffffffffffffff seriously? So we have to either use one of their provided Minimalism layouts, or go back to our own homegrown overrides?

... can we start mailing dead chipmunks to LJ headquarters or something? I'm not suggesting we kill chipmunks. That would be cruel. Just find ones that died of natural causes and mail them to LJ, with mean notes attached.

I know I'm not the most active person in the game at the best of times, but I just wanted to throw out there that I've been much less active than I otherwise would have because of this whole thing. I've let some icon packs expire, and I'm planning on letting my accounts drop to Basic when they run out. AND I've got ideas for one or two townies I'd like to app, but I haven't yet -- all because of this whole situation.

I don't think I'm the only one.

If everybody wants to stay with LJ, I'll stay, but I'd really rather not. I'm just so done with all of their crap.

Re: General Discussion

[identity profile] whateverknight.livejournal.com 2012-03-05 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Another point to add: As a programmer, I'm insulted by the Classic Comments fix. They didn't "fix" anything so much as add some code to the Minimalism style that mimics the old comments pages. If only one programmer was working on that, it couldn't have taken him or her more than a day or two to crap it out. The fact that they made us wait two and a half months for it speaks volumes.

I hope we don't decide to stay, but if we do, I'll make a custom style that fixes it so that it allows custom css, and do the same for the other LJ styles.

I've modified Smooth Sailing for Relly so that it has comment pages that are similar to the old style -- she's using it on Rinoa's and George's journals. I need to go back through and refine it more, but it's usable.

I put instructions on how to apply it to your own journal here (http://whateverknight.livejournal.com/14207.html).
