Rey sort of had a schedule to her day, and today it was impossible to actually keep to it. She woke up on time, somehow took so long to get ready doing the same things she did every day that she got out the door to training later than intended. She'd set an alarm to leave the warehouse with plenty of time to get to work, and yet still ended up being late.

So she was a little frazzled today, and checking the time too much because she didn't understand what it seemed to be doing today.

Oh, here we are again. Tomorrow I suppose we'll see if there will be six more weeks of winter. Which, honestly, seems likely. Don't you agree?

*chittering*

No, I don't think any of you are groundhogs, it's just a normal question. Look, let's just get this going, hmm? Sairis had a morning of cartoons and cereal like any proper college student should, honestly. And tea, it seems. Which is what lured Henry in to try before they engaged in a religious debate. Caleb stopped in for the cartoons as well.

And that's all we have. Go enjoy the last of the weekend, folks.

Gregorith had vacationed in Asgard, had even spent some time in what he thought were the colder areas. But he'd not spent a lot of time in those areas and they never got this cold.

On his way in to work he remembered something from a funny video he'd seen where a woman started out singing a Christmas song and then cut off dramatically when she opened the door to see a wet snowy landscape.

"Well the weather outside is- nope!"

He'd layered up so he wasn't even that uncomfortable on the short walk but the cold made him somewhat paranoid about exposing any part of him to the air. And when he got inside he felt suddenly sleepy and he wondered if it was his eyes thawing out.

In any case he was here, and he was working on de-grouching himself.

When Sairis arrived in the common room, the television was on. There were pictures on it that seemed drawn rather than live people, and they were...definitely odd. Somehow captivating, though.

He made tea absent-mindedly and opted for some of the "cereal" (which still didn't look like it was made from any grain he knew). There was a picture on the box of milk being poured over it, so he tried that. It was sweet, but like the television, oddly good.

So he'd just be eating sugary cereal and watching Saturday morning cartoons I don't care if they're not a thing anymore.

Good morning, everyone, and I do hope you are all tucked up somewhere warm, unlike myself as I am cruelly beset by rodents determined to drag me from my warm bed to read their gossipy little scribblings.

*chittering*

Yes, I do love gossip, but that's not the point. The point is that I was warm and now I am not. Let's get on with this so that I may aspire to be warm again, shall we?

At the school, Overcoming Obstacles played in the snow, then Combat 101 learned how to properly throw a punch, followed by Cupcakes of the World(s) learning of the cupcakes of Indonesia.

I've nothing from the dormitory, and cannot tell if the porg is sad or merely cold. However, in the town, Detective Watts at the Trooper Station received a delivery of flowers courtesy of Mr. Grant. At Needful Things, Dr. Quinn--ooooh! Dr. Quinn came across a possible spell book! I shall have to stop by and see about that. At Stark Tower, Mr. Anthony Stark was hard at work in his laboratory until Mr. Rogers interrupted to remind him of dinner...and that is the last of the notes. Everyone else must have been too cold to do anything.

Now, I am off for a cup of tea and a bit of a huddle under a blanket. Farewell, dear listeners!

Tony had meant to do something nice for Steve after they got back from their class and all the snow involved in it. He'd really meant to. But instead he'd immediately gotten pulled into a project after a phone call from his R&D department back in New York, needing a solution before Pepper got an ulcer from the stress.

Which meant he went straight to the lab to work it out. And then that turned into tinkering with his dozens of other Stark Industries based projects in various states of completion.

And then from there, he was working on a version of the suit. Mark... look, the number wasn't important. The important thing was that he'd forgotten the original plan. Which he'd realize at some point, right?

Today the Danger Shop had been set up with punching bags, and Thor explained to his students, "Today you will learn how to throw a punch, or review the skill, if you have already been taught. First, and most critically, learn how to make a fist: your thumb goes on the outside of your fingers, not the inside. Tucked inside, you risk breaking it. Do not do this. Second, learn where to punch. The face is an obvious target, but it is full of bones close to the surface, and punching hard surfaces risks damage to your hand. This does not necessarily mean you should not hit someone in the face--a swollen eye or a broken nose can debilitate your opponent enough to assure your victory or escape--but that you should be prepared for the consequences." Thor pulled up an anatomical diagram made of hard light and pointed out other good targets, such as the solar plexus, the kidneys, and the groin.

"Now, how does one throw a punch? There are six basic forms of punch: the jab, the cross, the lead and rear hook, and the lead and rear uppercut. You may have heard of the 'haymaker,' which is similar to a hook but unbalanced and leaves one open to counterattack. You will learn better form here."

Thor handwavily guided his students through each form of punch, then sent them to the bags to practice for the rest of class. "You may focus on one punch or rotate through all of them. The choice is yours, but I would recommend the latter approach. No one tool will serve in all circumstances."

The teachers were in the Danger Shop today, bundled up. They'd wanted to play in the snow with the dogs, but Fee and Libby got distracted and they decided that the walls were necessary so the entire class period wasn't spent chasing the dogs all over the island.

"Hi," Steve said, grinning. "Turns out that the dogs love snow."

"Good for them, less great for us," Tony said with a sigh as the dogs were attempting to barrel around through the programmed snow.

"We've put up some of their obstacle course gear," Steve said, gesturing at the tunnel and then the little weave poles, "but they aren't really interested."

"But we thought fetch might work," Tony added. At the word 'fetch' three pairs of ears perked up from in the snow.

"It will definitely work better than trying to run the course," Steve said.

“Something different today,” Stark said. “Although that’s the idea, isn’t it? New things each week. We went, some of us, to Indonesia a few years ago. Stayed on a lovely warm island…”

He sighed and looked outside. Was this winter colder? Maybe it was just him.

“With a beach and plenty of sunshine and no snow or cold at all. Now, I don’t know if any of you went there or not. If you did, I hope you remember it fondly. Today’s cupcakes are from Indonesia.” He lifted the cloche on the table in front of him to reveal today’s cupcakes.

“These are called Bolo Kukus.” Hopefully he’d gotten the pronunciation right. “They’re a type of steamed cupcake. Very different from what I usually make, or eat, or what you might find in the bakery here. Here things have frosting and I would usually say cupcakes need frosting but I’m trying to be a bit more open-minded about that sort of thing.”

“So! These are steamed rather than baked. Something new, as I said. So we’ll need tins to steam them in and a steamer.” He pointed to the relevant objects as he spoke.

“Don’t worry if things don’t work out the first time. We’ve time to try again and this is a new recipe for most of you if not all of you. There’s a copy of the recipe for all of you, and I’ve got different colors to use to dye the cake different colors. I wonder if edible glitter would work? We had glitter in drinks yesterday in Kitty’s class…”

“So! Let’s try to steam some cupcakes. You can try one of the ones I’ve already made first, if you like, or save it for later, or not eat one at all. And there’s no decorating needed today. Oh, maybe the glitter could go on at the end…or colored sugar?”

Hello, it's Steve Rogers with all of the news of yesterday!

In classes, Liliana led her class through the study of red mana, then went to her office to find someplace warm to vacation. Don't talk to Tony. You'll plot, I just know it. The library gremlins had set up a beach in the library, Cara and Jane made sure their movie makes none of us want to go somewhere where fire tornadoes might exist, and Don gave the Norse Mythology class a history lesson and didn't mention cows this week.

In town, Watts and Steven met up at the museum for a lunch date, Thor manned the Devil's Nest, and the Supper Club went to Waffle House.

[personal profile] ifwebeworthy posting in [community profile] fandomhigh
"I realized I left out an important piece of information at the beginning of this class," Don admitted. "When we talk about the 'sources' for Norse myths, what are those sources? What are the texts?" He held up two books. "These are the texts: the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda. Both were composed in the thirteenth century CE from older sources, but while we know the Prose Edda was written by Snorri Sturluson, an Icelandic scholar, we don't know who wrote the Poetic Edda. And, fun fact, we don't know what the word 'Edda' means. So even in the source material, there's so much missing information. Why? To be really blunt: Christianity. For a long time in much of Europe, Christian religious institutions were responsible for preservation of knowledge, and they didn't want to preserve the knowledge of 'pagan' religions. We're lucky we have this much.

"So when I say, 'This is what these people believed,' that's maybe not true. Maybe that's just the version that got written down, and most people believed a different version of the story. Where I come from, Loki was adopted by Odin and raised as Thor's brother, but that's not in either Edda and it upsets Thor. But that doesn't necessarily mean people didn't know that, or that that wasn't true in other universes. It just didn't make it to the page.

"Your lesson this week isn't about a myth or a story. It's about the preservation of information. Just because it isn't of value to you in your time doesn't mean it won't be valuable to people in the future. Who knows what other stories we might have if there was a whole third book?" Maybe something that would explain what Odin's problem even was...no. No, that would take more than one book.

Today's class met across the river from a small valley, surrounded by high mountains. Perched on the side of one of those mountains was a lofty monastery where chanted voices sang out from time to time, caught upon an echo through the mountaintops. "And this is Kaladesh," she welcomed. "Far from the parts of the plane I usually roam; I'm much more at home in Ghirapur, the capital city. But the Devra Cliffs are known for being lovely."

"Today, as you have likely put together already, we're going to talk about red mana," she said, the white board behind her filled with the now-familiar questions and, more importantly, the word at the top now
Freedom

• What does red mana desire? What is its end goal?

• What means does red mana use to achieve these ends?

• What does red mana care about? What does it represent?

• What does red mana despise? What negatively drives it?

• What is red mana's greatest strength? Greatest weakness?

Freedom Through Action )

Liliana took a sip of her tea as the lecture wound down. "Even with its focus on relationships and bonds, red is a very individualistic color, placing its own beliefs of what's right above everyone else's - though, thankfully, those beliefs generally extend only over what is right for oneself.. Red's greatest strength is its ability to know what it wants, the purpose and clarity so many others lack. In addition, red is committed to taking action to get the things it wants. Others might pine for things; red actively takes the steps to acquire them. This drive grants red a passion and speed that can often overwhelm its adversaries. Red's enthusiasm creates an energy that allows it to do amazing things - it is a color heavily associated with art, with passion, with creativity - art is, of course, often meant to make you feel."

Anyway, here I am with today's news of yesterday's people who actually went out and did things, which, just to be clear, is crazy talk. In School, Squirrel! was cancelled because Professor Sims knows what's up. No matter how hard I hoped for it, Beginning Gourmet Techniques was not cancelled and taught us how to clarify butter and make a roux and a béchamel sauce. Tasks! also remained uncancelled, but they got to destroy a cake out of it.

No Dorms, presumably because everyone was hunkered down, and very little in Town for the same reason. Professor Vess refused to leave her bed for work, makes perfect sense, Caleb went to his shift at Furnado which doesn't, though I will grant that the animals need someone to take care of them, and Professor James Stark was at the Clinic admiring a giant snow crab.

And we're not doing an extended goodbye, so just enjoy Brujas by Princess Nokia while I sign off.

"Welcome back," he greeted as the students arrived. The Danger Shop was set up to resemble a humid jungle environment today. "And welcome to the Savage Land." He looked around at the trees. "Or a reasonable approximation, I guess. It's a jungle in here, but out there?" He gestured over his shoulder at the edge of the treeline. "Out there is Antarctica. Trust me, you don't want to be out there. Not unless you've got ice powers or something."

Or you were possessed by an energy ghost and had a god-like alternate self around to rescue you when even the energy ghost couldn't help, anyway.

"What's a jungle doing in Antarctica? One of life's little mysteries. And anyway, the fact that this is a jungle ain't the most important bit."

An uncanny -- but not Uncanny -- roar sounded in the distance.

"That's a t-rex," Gambit said cheerfully. "You'll also find sabertooth tigers, giant crocodiles, and basically any other big prehistoric predator you can think of out here. There was no Kitty visible when the students got in today. Not because she wasn't there but because sometimes you had to add a little mystery. The Danger Shop was programmed as usual, with them in their individual little simulations, starting with a decorated cake on the table in the study, with an envelope in front of it.

Destroy this cake. Most beautiful destruction wins. Your time starts now.

It was warmer, at least. And it wasn't snowing at the moment. But it was still very much winter and Stark was bundled up against the cold and carrying hot coffees into the clinic again.

He did pause outside the door to admire the snow sculpture of a crab someone had made.

"Snow crab?" he asked once he got inside and set down the tray of coffee cups. "Who made it?"

Stabby, who was wearing mittens and a hat that appeared to be handmade for him, shrugged in a crabby way.

"It was there when we got here. A mystery sculpture by a mystery artist."

The clinic was open, it was warm inside, the crab probably hadn't made a large snow version of himself, and the alien was in.

Beginning Gourmet Cooking Techniques, period two

Some instructors might be wimps, but Hannibal was not one of them. He rather enjoyed this weather; it gave him a chance to wear his warm clothing.

He would hear no slander against his hat!

He nodded and waved his students over to his counter at the front.

"We'll be discussing a number of sauces and techniques later in the semester, and you will need to know some techniques before we begin on them. The first is called a roux. A roux is flour and salt cooked together; it can be used as a base for some recipes, and some of the techniques it uses will help with others, such as gravy or gelatin."

"Our roux starts with clarified butter." He put a square block of butter into a small pot and began heating it. "Standard butter consists of butterfat, milk solids, and water. Clarifying it removes the water and milk solids. Clarified butter can get much hotter without burning, which makes it very good for frying." He demonstrated how to skim the butter as it cooked, leaving only the part they wanted.

"Once we have our clarified butter, we can start on the rest of the roux. A good roux is essential to many sauces. It helps to thicken them and adds some flavor. It's important not to burn it, and to make sure that the fat and the flour mix evenly." He showed how to finish making it.

"After that, the next challenge you face with any sauce, particularly as a beginner, is avoiding lumps. You must add the liquids slowly, and it helps if they're cold. If you add them too quickly, or too much at once, it won't be pretty."

After he'd demonstrated the proper technique, he nodded to them. "Today we'll be making a béchamel sauce, and you'll be clarifying your own butter and making the roux. Please let me know if you have any questions."

This morning, everyone in the class had been sent a message.

Sometimes the distractions are too much. I'm not going out in this weather. Stay home.

Jon was cold, still emotionally sore from his conversation a few days ago with Liliana, and disinclined to go out in this. Enjoy a day off, class! Or do like your instructor and curl up in a ball under the covers and stay warm.

It might still be cold, and the snow might be a challenge (though still pretty), but the animals at the shelter still needed caring for.

He might not be afraid of dogs anymore but he found that he was still more of a cat person. Maybe it was the accoustics, but the cat room was so much quieter. Though the dogs seemed happier to see him.

When everything was cleaned and everyone was fed and watered, Caleb checked on one particular feline resident. There was a very frightened kitten he had decided to try to befriend. Last time it had spat, and hissed, and slapped at his hand (thank goodness he'd taken the precaution of wearing a thick glove). He'd kept his distance, just putting a bit of food nearer to it.

Today it didn't seem outwardly any friendlier but it didn't bat at him immediately when he reached in to change the bedding. He got some treats and once again placed them near the poor kid.

"I know darlin'." he said. "I'm sorry. But I promise, you're safe."

The shelter is open.

Good morning, all. This is Kitty, who had a little battle of wills with the squirrels because I didn't want to go out and I think they didn't want to go out, and anyway, I lost. Go, me. While I'm out, let's get through some notes!

In the dorms-

*porg*

-Saris was in the common room with breakfast and a book. In town, Gregorith braved the elements to get to the museum, and Stark had a snow day at JGOB, looking up warm places. Which might me what I spend most of my day doing.

Anyway, I'm done. Stay warm!

Okay, the snow? I could do without the snow. Let's just get this over with so I can continue to try dragging a Husky indoors when they don't want to be.

Hi. This is Tony Stark with... the bit of news from yesterday. Caleb attempted to make pizza in the dorms with Sairis stopping in to see what he was doing before they compared notes on musical instruments.

But that's all there is. Please stay warm, folks.

Even if he didn't have chores now, Sairis couldn't help but get up early. With no pigeons or garden to tend to, he went straight for breakfast. Bacon, eggs, and fried bread were comforting and familiar.

Since he was using what was apparently everybody's food, it only seemed right to make enough for anyone else who might come later, too.

Then he was sitting down with breakfast and tea and reading a book he'd gotten from the library. He only understood about half of it, but he thought he was at least getting an idea of how things worked.

It was cold and snowy and Stark did not enjoy winter weather at all. Still, he'd decided to drag himself out of his apartment because he hadn't left it since finishing his class on Friday and he wanted to at least make an effort to not hide away when he wasn't supposed to be somewhere for work or class.

The bakery was warm and inviting and he could have a warm drink and some still-warm cookies.

And he could watch the snow fall. It was pretty so long as he didn't have to feel it. Of course, he'd gone out and would have to go outside again to go back home.

For now he had tea and he had cookies and he had his phone out looking at places that might be warm. He almost certainly wouldn't go anywhere on a trip by himself but at least he could think warm thoughts?

[open, obvs. Baked goods for all.]

Neither rain nor snow nor cold of...cold, would keep this workaholic from his appointed rounds. He had the entire rest of the week off, he could only stand that for so long.

He was glad the island was small though.

But Gregorith was here, he had coffee and cocoa in case anyone else was adventurous enough to brave the elements and found their way here.

It was really, very, incredibly cold outside. Which was unfortunate for a number of reasons, one of them being that Caleb was feeling poorly, emotionally speaking and his usual remedy of going for a broody walk was, well not out of the question but seemed like it would be counter productive.

So instead, he was listening to the radio, as he attempted to make pizza. Well a few pizzas as the pre-made crusts only came in so many sizes.

The current music selection was actually doing a fairly good job at alleviating some of his angst.

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to this radio broadcast. I hope you've all a cup of something hot to drink on this hideously cold morning. The squirrels have once again neglected to provide me with tea, but what do you expect from squirrels? Let's get started, hmm?

At the school, Overcoming Obstacles and Combat 101 both enjoyed a film, whilst Cupcakes of the World learned about the cake of the Black Forest. Chocolate and cherries, sounds lovely! I don't see anything from the dormitory, so we shall move along to the town, where at the Trooper Station, Detective Watts was joined by Mr. Grant for luncheon, whilst at the forge Mr. Henry of Skalitz considered expanding his repertoire. Dr. Quinn was at Needful Things, where they stock, allegedly, everything, and Miss Skywalker was breaking crystals at her warehouse--is that some type of slang? The squirrels do not know. Well, she was accompanied by Dean Skywalker, so he might. Speaking of Miss Skywalker, she made a sort of fort at her apartment, where she was joined by a fashionably late Mr. Blackwood. And that is the last of my notes, so I shall be dashing off to the dormitory to warm up. Farewell, everyone! May next week be warmer!

Well, there weren't any more bite suits in the classroom. Everyone be happy about that. No, instead, there was a little set up for a movie.

There was also popcorn! ...decidedly less popcorn than they'd arrived with, granted, but popcorn! (Shh, supersoldiers got snacky.) "We decided to give the dogs a break," Steve said, "and you a break from the dogs. They can be a lot."

"Also, Fee chewed through an entire door, so she's getting a little check up at the vet," Tony said like that a normal thing.

"She needs to stop doing that," Steve agreed.

"So, movie!" Tony said clapping his hands together.

"It's very educational," Steve assured them. (Steve had not seen this movie.)

Before any kind of laundry fun today, Rey was at the warehouse, practicing some fine detail work. She'd gotten some sugar crystals- not a lot, she didn't want to be wasteful- and had spread them across the floor, doing things like moving them into patterns, or picking up very specific ones one at a time.

She was now on the floor, very focused as she tried to split one of the crystals into two. If she could crack a big rock, she could crack something this small, it was just a matter of adjusting.

She would likely never need to use this, but you never know!

Another Friday, another surprising success in Harley managing to be at her store on the day that she had technically established she would be.

She was also putting a new sign in the window:

NEEDFUL THINGS
WE'VE GOT EVERYTHING!!!

Which was definitely false advertising, but not as false as it could've been! They had all sorts of stuff! Furniture, knick knacks - what more did you need? Needful Things was open, and had a lot of stuff.

Just maybe not everything.

Fandom thought it was being funny.

Rey had gone down to the laundry room to wash her bedding. All was well. Then she came back down to take it out of the dryer, pulled out her sheets… then more sheets… a comforter that she hadn't put in there… more sheets… What had gone into the dryer was a perfectly normal amount of laundry, and what came out was a clown car's worth of bedding.

What she was left with was a ridiculous amount of things that had just appeared mixed in with her actual stuff, and it actually felt like less work to get it up to the second floor than to sort through it in the laundry room. So that's what she did. She got it to her apartment, looked at the mess and decided she really didn't want to put anything/everything away right now.

Instead, she ended up being inspired to pull her furniture together to create an extension to the dining room table, which she used to create a fort with the copies amounts of sheets and pillows and duvets she'd pulled out of the machine, until she ended up with the fluffiest, coziest pillow fort possible.

Then she took a picture and sent it to Adrian, with a text reading, If you're free tonight, dress comfortably. Sometimes you had to use the island's weirdness for good.

Apparently Henry really was doomed to make horseshoes for most of his shifts here. Oh well.

"Suppose there are worse things," he mused aloud to Mutt, as he watched the metal shift in color in the forge. "And if we get bored, we can always go back to swords. Or-- axes. Or a mace. You know, I don't think I've ever made a mace... only seen Father do it..."

Did that make it a good idea or a bad idea to try? Ah well.
