Today the classroom looked the same, except for all of the drop cloths and tarps covering the room. You know, a totally normal change.

"Today we're going to just be... I don't know, throwing glitter at some things," Kitty said. "I have paint you can put glitter in and splatter it around, you can just glue stuff to the walls, I don't care as long as you don't permanently destroy the classroom. I've also got coveralls you can put on if you don't want to get your clothes glittered to hell and back."

Was she maybe running out of ideas and so glad the semester was over soon? Was it obvious?

Leroy! We don’t say things like that where the island can hear us. Hush.

First off we have yesterday’s classes at the school. Feeding Yourself 101 watched a movie about a rodent who cooks. I suppose we should be grateful the squirrels don’t try that. And in Ethics Anakin and Ahsoka tried to make us get into strange vehicles with strange people. Bad enough when he does that to pick up new students…

Nothing from the dorms but a couple things from the town. At Liliiana’s shop, Sairis asked the armor for answers about Anakin. There are no answers about Anakin.

And at Caritas Tino was still missing along with another zombie. This is getting odd. I do think someone ought to question the raccoons.

That’s all for today from yesterday.

It's tiiiiiiime!

Springtime, that is! Which means, in chronological order:

1) That pesky sex pollen, from the 19th to the 24th
2) The Spring Formal on the evening of the 24th
3) AU Kids, appearing the morning of the 25th and staying until the evening of the 27th!

You have the option of having children show up at any age from 3 through 17. Alumni can get in on the action too, as kids of theirs can also find themselves coming through the portal, landing in Fandom, and giving their very surprised parents a call. Or, if they are teenagers, roll their eyes, ignore being responsible members of society, and bop around the island having their own fun. The sign-up for AU kids is up in Plotterywheel, so get your thinking caps on for brainbreaky and adorable kids/teenagers and their oh-so-necessary icons, then trot on over there to sign up before Thursday, April 23rd!

Like it says in the headline, here's the place to drop your kid (and teenager) plans! These are due by Thursday, April 23rd, 11:59 PT. Comments are screened for maximum secrecy-surpriseyness!

The important details/rules:

* You will get one journal for your character's "family." Multiple children can be had but they must be in this one journal. If your "child" is with another character in the game you must share the journal with that character.

* Your character may have children with:

a) another character in the game
b) another character in your canon
c) with an anonymous person that you do not want to define or they can be reproduced asexually. (Hey. It could happen)
d) You may also have a child with an NPC character from another canon. HOWEVER, if that canon has any characters within the game, you must contact those people privately for permission.

* If your child is with another character in the game, please make sure you have their permission first before applying.

* Children can be between 3 and 17 years of age.

* The plot is open for students, townies, teachers, and alumni/expats alike.

* There is a cap of two children per character, but each child is only counted against one IG parent.

In other words:

Steve and Tony's players decide they should have two kids: "Tesla Rogers-Stark" and "Bucky Rhodey I Told You'd I'd Put It On the Certificate Don't Test Me Rogers-Stark". Since these kids are shared between two IG characters, each parent can take one of the kids towards their two kid total, leaving them each with one more slot to use. So now Steve can also have a kid with Bucky named "Sarah Winifred Barnes", and Tony can use his other slot to raise his and canon love interest Pepper Potts' kid, Peter Parker. Wait, no. Well, kind of.

Ask if the math still gets you confuzzled.

And a form for your copy-pasting pleasure!

Sairis came by after class, still a bit confused about what ethics had to do with dirty transportation. (Though what did he know? He'd walked most everywhere, with the occasional dead steed.)

"Do you think the instructors know anything about ethics?" he asked the haunted armor. It just stood there, as usual when Liliana wasn't there.

"I miss Charles," Sairis sighed. The dragon skull hadn't usually spoken, either, but it felt like home.

As usual, there was a sign in the window: Charms and potions for sale! Get extra focus for exams!

Were exams here anything like what he'd seen at the university back home? Sairis had no idea. He was hoping. But anyway, the shop was open!

Anakin and Ahsoka welcomed their class to a simulated version of a grimy spaceport. "Welcome."

"We can't teach you everything there is to know about ethics in one semester," Ahsoka said. "But hopefully we've given you a good start."

"Or, for those who have taken this a few times, more to think about," Anakin added. "Ahsoka, explain why we're here."

"While we've largely focused on helping you develop your own ethical framework, one aspect we haven't touched on as much is that having a solid grasp of ethics yourself will help you identify those with let's go with more flexible principles." In other words it helped you look out for people who were suss af.

"So, catch a ride with a stranger," Anakin said. "Make sure they're trustworthy!"

And not, say, Darth Maul.

What up, Fandom? It's me, ya girl Arden Finch, and judging by the size of this pile of notes, boy do I have some news for you! Did somebody throw a party yesterday that I missed...?

*chittering*

Okay, actually, I have just been informed that this pile of notes are actually all the receipts for all the alcohol the squirrels have drunk for the past year. Wait. Y'all can claim that as a business expense? How does that work? How does any of this work? You're squirrels, why are you paying taxes?

You know, here I am, asking questions I know I don't want to know the answers to. So let's just go to this pile of...this page of notes.

In School, Squirrel! brainstormed an exam for class, Beginning Gourmet Cooking Techniques covered the five mother sauces--

*snickering*

--I'm not even going to ask what pervy thing y'all have decided that means, thank you. And in Tasks, people had to knock over a hundred cans with five--

*more snickering*

--throws. In five throws.

*chorus of disappointed groans*

Serves all of you right. Skipping over Dorms, we have a bit of activity in Town, with Mayor Faden doing paperwork and ordering radios at the Town Hall, and Professor James at the Clinic learned that the crab had gone surfing.

And that's all I got, so I'm out before the squirrels give me another reason to want to punt one of them into the wall. This is ya girl, Arden Finch, signing off, and leaving you with another great bop, esmerelda's I'm Not A Princess I'm A God. Bye, Fandom!

Knock over exactly 100 cans. You must throw all 5 balls, and pull the rope really hard. You must stay on the spot and you may not move the spot. No powers allowed. The closest to 100 cans wins.

When the students got to the Danger Shop today, Hannibal nodded and waved them to the front.

"In traditional Western cuisine, there are five sauces which are referred to as the 'mother sauces'. Each of them can be used as a base for many other sauces, so once you learn them, you're well on your way to being able to make any number of things."

He had five dishes in front of him, and indicated them in turn; there were little spoons so they could each taste them.

"The first is Béchamel. It's the simplest; you don't need to prepare anything ahead of time. It starts with only milk, flour, and butter. The butter and flour you use to make a roux, as we did in an earlier class; then the roux thickens the milk and herbs and spices are added; salt and pepper, often clove, maybe onion. Many creamy or cheesy sauces start with Béchamel."

"Next is Velouté. Also fairly simple; instead of milk, you use some sort of stock - poultry, veal, fish, any meat that makes a light stock - which you would generally make ahead of time. Any spices would already be in the stock. You thicken the stock with the roux. Mushroom sauce and many seafood sauces are made from this. And don't worry," he told Arden, "this one uses veal."

"Espagnole is a brown sauce. It begins the same as the velouté, but with a darker stock, such as beef, and is a bit more complex. Once you have the stock, you add tomato puree and vegetables. Some mushroom and wine-based sauces use this, and it's often cooked together with more stock to make a demi-glace which is used in other sauces."

"The fourth is Hollandaise. It has only two basic ingredients - clarified butter and egg yolks. Herbs and lemon are often added. It is a permanent emulsion; like oil and vinegar, the butter and eggs would not normally mix, but when combined correctly, the sauce will not separate. There are a number of other sauces that use this as a base, but it's not uncommon to see it used on its own, either, particularly on vegetables."

"The last is tomato sauce. Which is not, generally speaking, what you'll find on a pizza," he noted, with a wry smile. "Vegetables are sautéed, traditionally in pork fat, then added to tomatoes, stock, and perhaps some further bones or meat, then it's cooked in the oven. Traditionally it's also thickened with a roux, although the tomatoes are often enough of a thickening agent."

Once they'd had a chance to try them all, he continued. "Today we'll be working through as many of these as you're able. I suggest you attempt them in this order; I'd rather you make a good béchamel than five lumpy sauces. If you should need help, please let me know."

I keep forgetting to post about this: we've been troubleshooting the "missing notifications" problem for the past few days. (Well, I say "we", really I mean Mark and Robby; I'm just the amanuensis.) It's been one of those annoying loops of "find a logical explanation for what could be causing the problem, fix that thing, observe that the problem gets better for some people but doesn't go away completely, go back to step one and start again", sigh.

Mark is hauling out the heavy debugging ordinance to try to find the root cause. Once he's done building all the extra logging tools he needs, he'll comment to this entry. After he does, if you find a comment that should have gone to your inbox and sent an email notification but didn't, leave him a link to the comment that should have sent the notification, as long as the comment itself was made after Mark says he's collecting them. (I'd wait and post this after he gets the debug code in but I need to go to sleep and he's not sure how long it will take!)

We're sorry about the hassle! Irregular/sporadic issues like this are really hard to troubleshoot because it's impossible to know if they're fixed or if they're just not happening while you're looking. With luck, this will give us enough information to figure out the root cause for real this time.

Hello everyone! It's time again for applications!

To apply, read the following information, click the link to the application form, fill it out for the character you want to play, and send it off!

The basics you need to know )

* At this point, the school is now officially a collegiate setting. All student applications must be for college students or grad students.

* Teachers are required to teach at least one class/workshop per week, and be accessible to students when needed. This also applies for characters applying to teach an adult class at the Community Center, rather than one at the school.

* If you would like to apply for a new character to teach an adult workshop, fill out the Character Application exactly as if you were applying for a teacher, but mark it "Townie" instead. Note in the Course Description that it would be an adult workshop, not a student workshop. Because of the need to keep track of the adult workshops being offered and start them at the same time, these applications will be processed on the same schedule as student/teacher applications.

* Current townies or teachers can also apply to teach an adult workshop. If you would like to teach an adult workshop with a current character, you can fill out a limited application by following the instructions here.

* See this post for more about character activity.

* All accepted characters go on probation for the first month. After that time, if there's anyone who's disappeared or is causing problems, we'll talk to them about it and possibly discuss removal from the game. It's very difficult to get to the removal stage.

* Improvisation. Fandom High is a balance between planning and improvisation. Some people plan plots, but a lot of the day-to-day stuff is purely improvisation where you throw a bunch of characters together and see what happens.

What’s needed to apply )
Early applications )
What happens once you’ve applied )
Notes for Current Players )
Notes for New Players )

Application Form (This is a GDoc whose text you can paste into an e-mail or attach as a txt file, then send to us at fandomhighadmins dot iambicnut dot com.)

You only need to fill out the parts that are relevant to the type of character you are applying for (ie: if you're a student applicant, don't fill in the stuff marked 'Townies Only').

If you don't get a confirmation email from us within 24 hours, please email us!

Applications close Saturday, May 2nd at 11:59pm Eastern. The next application session for students and teachers after this will be for the Fall session in July!

At the school, Overcoming Obstacles worked with invisible dogs, which does sound like it would be an obstacle to a great many things. Combat 101 watched a film about boxing, and Cupcakes of the World(s) learned about the cupcakes of Mexico.

I've no notes from the dormitory, so we shall move along to the town, where Mr. Henry of Skalitz, ah, dressed in accordance with the weather at the forge, whilst Miss Skywalker trained in the park, observed by Mr. Dooley, who had some questions about her magic laser sword thing, and Dean Skywalker, who hoped she was acting as a flamingo deterrent. And finally, at the Trooper Station, Detective Watts enjoyed a sandwich, and this counts as news. *disappointed sigh* I shall hope for better gossip next week, I suppose. Until then, dear listeners!

Sairis had decided to treat himself to some coffee - nothing fancy, just some time out of the room. But when he got there, he found that there was a board announcing something called a "splashdown special" which involved an awful lot of foam and something called "gummy fish".

Which led to him asking why. Which led to an explanation. And...the moon? That was somewhere you could actually go?

So now Sairis was sitting at a table with a frothy, fishy, very sugary drink and googling a lot about the history of the space program. It was a lot.

"I realized we haven't really talked about the goddesses of Norse mythology much yet, and that's my mistake." He was preoccupied with the family drama side of things, which the women smartly stayed mostly out of. So today we're going to talk about the goddess who most directly impacts your lives today: Frigg, goddess of marriage, prophecy, and motherhood, wife of Odin. You talk about Frigg at least once a week: Friday is named for her.

"Now, where I'm from, Odin is married to Frigga, who sometimes goes by Freyja. Mythologically speaking, these are two separate goddesses, with Freyja being a goddess of love and beauty, but the names are similar enough that people do get them confused and some scholars argue about whether or not they were originally one goddess. If you'll remember the story we read last week, Freyja featured there. Freyja is also a goddess of the dead: she receives half of those who die in battle in her field of Folkvangr. And, fun fact, she rides in a chariot pulled by cats. Way more fun than goats, right?" Sorry, Thor. "And, because the Norse love a similar name, apparently, she has a twin brother named Freyr. Freyr, Freyja, Frigga, Frigg. Get it? Got it? Good."

Back in the classroom! Back in the desks pushed together with supplies in the middle! Had Kitty actually put the room back together after class last week? No!

"We're going to be making ornaments today," Kitty said. "I know it's April. You may not celebrate chrustmas. But there's nothing stopping you from hanging it on your window or something at any time of year. So have at it, let me know if you need more supplies."

Welcome to another Wednesday, Fandom.

Another quiet Tuesday yesterday. One class from the school. In Ethics we discussed whether lying is all right. It has to be. Sometimes.

Nothing from the dorms, sorry Porg.

And in the town Tino was once again missing from Caritas and Kitty was no closer to finding out where he was. The drummer was missing as well. I wonder…I hope Tino didn’t end up with the raccoons…

That’s all for today from yesterday. Try to enjoy your days, everyone.

What up, Fandom? It's me, ya girl, Arden Finch, bringing you all the best gossip mediocre squirrel journalists have collected. Don't look at me like that, Leroy, you know what you did.

School had its usual Monday complement of classes. Squirrel talked about boundaries and ways to say no, Beginner Gourmet Cooking Techniques made raindrop cakes which were very cool and also surprisingly hard to make, and Tasks gave knowing something like the back of your hand a run for its money.

No Dorms and no surprises there, but in Town, Caleb was dealing with kitty jealousy in Furnado, the Trooper Station was disappointed that Officer McGarrett wasn't doing an easter egg hunt, and Professor James got an Easter basket from the Easter Raccoon at the Clinic.

And that's all we got, so this is ya girl, Arden Finch, signing off, but leaving you with Keep It Movin' by Yazz, ft. Serayah

There are grand ethical choices to be made that change the course of history," Anakin said, "and there are the temptations to lie when you don't feel like going somewhere."

"After all, it's not like they can prove you didn't have itchy minerals," Ahsoka added.

"But there are some who feel they must be absolutely honest in all interactions," Anakin said.

"Still others might consider such a stance...ill advised."

"Which camp do you fall into, and how truthful would you like to be, even if being honest sent you to a family holiday you'll hate?"

Still no Tino, and he wasn't answering his phone. And the zombie drummer was out. They of course were no help, because, you know, zombies. Everything was probably fine, but Kitty was becoming bothered.

And the band just sounded weird with no percussion. It just did.

Last week, the students had had pictures taken of their hands. If they weren't here last week, it happened before class today.

And then the students would be released into a small room absolutely covered with Polaroids of hands. Not creepy at all. Really.

Find the photo of the back of your hand. Fastest wins.

"The bunny left you a basket," one of the nurses said as Stark walked n to the clinic that afternoon.

"What?"

"See? It says Stark on it in big letters?"

"Yes. I see... but the pawprints look more... raccoon than rabbit."

"It might have been a raccoon wearing bunny ears. I want looking that closely."

Stark approached the basket with no small amount of trepidation.

The crab, meanwhile, was hiding tiny plastic eggs in his tank.

The clinic was open. The crab was a day late. And the alien was in

Steve was in the office as usual on Monday, working hard and ignoring the expectant silence radiating off the Troopers.

"What?" he finally asked, looking over at them and the piles of plastic eggs on their desks. "We're not doing an egg hunt. You're grown-ass adults."

The Trooper Station was open and no fun at all, Steve.

Good morning, everyone. This is Kitty with my first broadcast of April and I need someone to explain to me how that happened. I'm going to blink and it'll be summer vacation and I'm not ready for summer vacation.

Anyway. Gregorith celebrated Easter by hiding candy around the museum, and Rey also had a candy-related day in which her tools became Twizzlers. Normal stuff.

And that's it for me. Till next week!

Today class was back in the Danger Shop with their cooking stations, and each one was outfitted with an assortment of gelatin types, food colorings, small knives and spatulas, along with...syringes?

Hannibal nodded to them both and smiled. "Today, we return to gelled things, and we learn about agar." He showed them a number of flakes. "We will be making raindrop cakes. They are deceptively simple in concept, but you will want to ensure you get the mixture and procedure correct so that it stays together. I have enabled us to cheat by using this room to generate a refrigeration unit that will quarter the time it will take to set the cakes. Once you have the basic concept down, you will find a number of moddable mix-ins at your stations, and can work at using them for added flavor and color."

He demonstrated the proper way to dissolve and mix the agar, then waved them toward their stations. "Please ask if you have any questions."

"Yesterday was a holiday for Christians," Jon began today. "Today still is, in the UK. Also it's Passover for Jews. Holidays can be terrible times for people who have issues with distraction or overstimulation. Not that this is the worst of it; that would probably be December. But as now is when we're having class, we'll work with what we've got."

He shrugged. "Again, sleep and exercise came up as good coping mechanisms." But look, not every class could be napping or going for a walk.

"Another one, though, is saying no." Jon was really bad at this one. "Putting up boundaries and finding ways to enforce them. So I thought we could work on that today."

He waved at the whiteboard at the front of the room, then drew a line down the center. "On this side, let's come up with boundaries. Things we don't want to do, particularly on a holiday, although general ones are also fine. On this side, we'll come up with ways to say no to them."

He carefully wrote on the first side, Getting blotto. On the other side next to it went, I'm even more unpleasant. Then he turned expectantly to the students.

The new-mama cat and her litter were doing quite well and had been moved to a larger cage, to accommodate the little ones' slowly increasing desire/ability to explore their surroundings.

And if Caleb didn't know better, he'd swear the semi-feral Kitten (whom he'd taken to calling Samantha, and who was becoming less feral by the day) was getting a little jealous of the attention he was giving them. She no longer hissed at him when he approached, allowed him to give her scritches even, but still balked at being handled. And she meowed any time he seemed to be looking in the direction of the youngins.

"You're still my favorite, kid." he assured her. "Us strays gotta stick together, right?"

No, you must be confused; I did this yesterday. Today is Sunday--Easter Sunday, and I must be getting to church! I've this new bonnet and everything!

*chittering*

Oh, why, yes, thank you, I did think the ribbon was a lovely choice, but what use is it if no one but squirrels sees it? I shall be late, and not even fashionably so...oh, just give me the notes, let's get on with it.

*ahem*

Good morning, everyone, and happy Easter! I'm sure you're wondering what our friends and neighbors were up to yesterday, and I've news to report from the town, where Mr. Raiden had a bit of a 'test run' for Easter brunch at Over Easy, and Mr. Gregorith encountered a raccoon whilst taking out the garbage. And I'm not seeing any further notes, so now I really must be going. Farewell until next time!

All of Rey's tools were Twizzlers today. She didn't know why, and she knew she couldn't fix it, so she didn't care. But everything was Twizzlers, and therefore unusable today. They were too floppy.

She was still trying to get work done by using things like pens in lieu of her tools. It was the principle of the thing.

Gregorith had been given the option by Blathers to take the day off, but Gregorith had most of the week off so he'd opted to come in for at least a few hours in the morning.

He'd spent the first hour hiding candy and small toys (some of which he'd made himself) throughout the museum, and put a sign out front inviting folks to come hunt for them.

The Museum is open for knowledge seekers, or the hunting for munchings, crunchings, or small things to put on your shelves or desks.

though tis the day of the big fambly gathering for the mun so I will likely be afk for a big chunk of the day. Happy Spring Holidays everyone!

Good morning, everyone! It is I, Miss Lydia Bennet, here to bring you the news of the day, although it seems to be a light day. Either the squirrels have begun their Easter celebrations early, or everyone was busy with Good Friday observations; who can say?

It seems that all my notes from yesterday are from the school, where Overcoming Obstacles had an Easter egg hunt for the dogs and Cupcakes of the World(s) learned of the cupcakes of Brazil, and then Miss and Dean Skywalker utilized the Danger Shop. And with that, I shall bid you farewell and a happy Easter.
