Vail Ski Resort | Sunday Morning, 10/17

The Fandomites' last morning in Vail dawned cool and clear, the resort warm enough to get by with a light jacket, the slopes above frosty and crisp.

The portal back to Fandom would arrive after lunch, so now was time for packing, last-minute souvenir-shopping, or one final lift up the mountain to the wonderful land of snow-sports.

Or alternatively, freaking the heck out in your hotel room because Fandom knows no boundaries of distance or decency when it comes to attacking its current and former residents in their sleep to leave ladybits where manbits used to be, and manbits where... you get the picture.

So might the maid, if you forgot to leave the Do Not Disturb sign out.

The snort was very unladylike even if it did not sound very much like himself.

"Are you enjoying finally being a man then?" he teased.

"It's interesting at least," Maladicta replied cheerfully. "I could turn into bats without losing any clothing!"

"That would change now?" he asked in surprise. If he were honest, he did not have as much interest in Maladicta turning naked right now. And he was refusing to let his mind wander to what he had missed last time.

Nudity. He missed rampant nudity.

"Oh yes, it only happens to female vampires."

He was aware that he had missed nudity, thank you very much. He'd also been very polite and had not glimpsed when she'd changed clothes. Sometimes being polite wasn't as fun.

"That seems unfair. I do not understand why it would make a difference," he was back to staring at his hands. Too thin wrists and slender fingers which he could not imagine gripping a sword or bow.

With enough work, they could. Maladicta was firmly of that belief.

"Why would it make a difference in being a soldier?"

"I would not like it if someone told me now that I could not fight," he admitted with a shrug of his shoulder and he was too conscious of his movements in this body. "But we are men and we believe that we fight for what we hold dear. Our mothers, wives and daughters are precious and we would not like to see them tainted by the blood that sticks to our hands. Perhaps it is foolish to think in such a manner, but it is not a malicious thought that drives us."

Look, she had to ask.

"More precious than your sons and brothers and fathers? I think a woman would like to protect them just as much." A beat. "If they were so inclined. But I believe not all men are meant for such a life either."

"It is our duty," Faramir leaned back in his chair, looking up at Maladicta. "I understand what you are saying, my lady, and I would not dream to stop you. For that matter, I do not think there is such a force in any world that could stop you. Yet..."

He hesitated for an instant, uncertain if she would deck him for his words. "It is that women bring life. Without them we would not be. So is it not natural to want to protect them who are more valuable than we shall ever be?"

"..." Maladicta was trying very hard not to laugh. "You should hope this change does not last very long then. Or you would experience the wonders of this precious gift we have."

Faramir made a face at her. "I believe that this change does not make me appreciate other women less," he told her. "I would take after you and run off to the rangers while trying to hide that I am truly a woman."

"But for now, it's just a hint of the life you could have led."

Perhaps it would have been easier. Perhaps his father would like him better when he stopped comparing him with Boromir. He did not speak those thoughts out loud and buried his face in his hands instead.

"You are enjoying this far too much," he told Maladicta, his voice muffled.

"You're very pretty," Maladicta pointed out helpfully.

He was not looking up, not when he could feel his face growing hot and normally he needed to be drunk to blush. Or so he told himself.

"Am I finally to your liking then, my lady? Or am I too vapid now?" he was at least laughing.

"You might be many things, but vapid is not among them," she assured him.

"That is something then," he decided, chancing a look at Maladicta. "I would hate to find out that I would suddenly be without any wit if I were to be a woman. I'd rather become the first shieldmaiden of Gondor."

And that, he supposed, would be why his father would not even approve of him like this.

Maladicta snorted in amusement. "Did you want to get coffee?"

...nope, that wasn't a date question at all.

Of course, not.

Faramir pretended having to consider it for a moment. "If you drink the coffee and I can get some more hot chocolate."

"I'll meet you there?" She needed to find the appropriate amount of scarves to travel outdoors like this.

Faramir nodded his agreement. "That works well. I will see you soon then, unless the island has more in store for us, of course."
