Vail Ski Resort | Sunday Morning, 10/17

The Fandomites' last morning in Vail dawned cool and clear, the resort warm enough to get by with a light jacket, the slopes above frosty and crisp.

The portal back to Fandom would arrive after lunch, so now was time for packing, last-minute souvenir-shopping, or one final lift up the mountain to the wonderful land of snow-sports.

Or alternatively, freaking the heck out in your hotel room because Fandom knows no boundaries of distance or decency when it comes to attacking its current and former residents in their sleep to leave ladybits where manbits used to be, and manbits where... you get the picture.

So might the maid, if you forgot to leave the Do Not Disturb sign out.

Well. The leaping out of bed certainly redirected Cally's gaze. In a completely unhelpful and horrifyingly inappropriate direction.

Luckily (by some standards), Cally wasn't Francine as sleep-slow with adrenaline flooding her system. "...Dolf?"

"How do you know my name?!"

Dolf felt horribly defenseless without the knife at his side. He was never going to leave it behind again.

Perhaps speaking calmly and slowly would help. "Because. I. Am. Cally."

Perhaps not staring at Dolf's breasts would help.

"But you're a boy!"

Yes, Dolf. We established this.

"And I--"

Only then did he notice his body was decidedly more lithe than he was used to, and it promptly blushed scarlet all over.

At least he was in good company? You just couldn't see as much of Cally's blush.

"Yes." Cally. Use your words. "You." More of them.

"Shirt." That was a good word. A very, very good word.

"Yes!"

Single-syllable words were the total in-thing in this room.

Dolf couldn't have snatched yesterday's t-shirt off the floor quicker than he did.

Oh, thank all seven of the gods that never existed in the first place, even the dead one and the mad one.

Blanket was also a good word, though somewhat ironic insofar as Cally only found the power to bury her face in it after it wasn't actually needed.

"What?" she moaned a bit pitifully, and fine, here Arthur, have a 10-credit note.

"I don't know!" Dolf said, quite emphatically, and nearly tripped on his way back to the bed. There, he yanked the blanket over him and over his head. "Is this like-- I think they talked about this."

Oh god. What had they said?

"Like what?" Somewhat muffled there, yes. Cally was recalling the various 'How to survive when Fandom decides to turn your life upside down' speeches that had been given at the reserves, but this specifically? "We're not even in Fandom. Do things like this happen all over your planet?"

"Not that I know," Dolf said, fighting the urge to squint down at his body under the blankets. Fighting it very hard. "Maybe it is like a sickness?"

Oh god.

"If so, I'm going to have a word with the nurses at the clinic, because they certainly didn't inoculate me against this!"

"This is not supposed to happen!" Dolf groaned, yanking his pillow over his face. "This is not how it works!"

"Apparently no one told our bodies that," Cally replied, a little less muffled and summoning up some reserve of dryness from somewhere now the initial YOU ARE DOLF AND YOU ARE A GIRL AND YOU ARE NUDE AND I HAVE BEEN STARING AT YOU FOR APPROXIMATELY THIRTY THOUSAND YEARS mortification was starting to recede.

"But I'm a girl!" Dolf pointed out. "It's not normal!"

Yes, Dolf. Yes, we'd established that by now.

"At least you're a pretty girl."

Yes. That was exactly the most comforting and least awkward thing she could have said.

Re: Room 117

[identity profile] swordsandsoccer.livejournal.com 2010-10-17 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Dolf stopped talking - at least - and shot her a dubious look across the room. "...You think?"

Wow. So it was possible to be awkward and weirded out and slightly charmed at the same time.

Utterly. It was even possible to add mildly amused to that mix, while still retaining the humiliation factor. "My accidentally exhaustive research into the subject would seem to indicate so."

"I would say that, too," Dolf muttered, and began to dig back under the blankets, "But boys are never pretty."

Cally couldn't help it; that was worth a snort. "You obviously haven't spent much time listening to teenage girls gossip about you."

Wait. "Boys. I mean. Not you in particular."

Re: Room 117

[identity profile] swordsandsoccer.livejournal.com 2010-10-18 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh," said Dolf, and then nodded quickly. "Sure. Right. Girls."

He didn't have the foggiest clue what he was saying.

And Cally felt she was somehow giving away the deep secrets of her usual gender, despite not usually being one of those teenage girls who used the word 'pretty' about boys. ...When not talking to her twin sister. Twin sisters didn't count.

There really was no saving the awkwardness, but she could try to help, at least. "My clothing might fit you, if you wished to borrow some..."
