Vail Ski Resort | Sunday Morning, 10/17

The Fandomites' last morning in Vail dawned cool and clear, the resort warm enough to get by with a light jacket, the slopes above frosty and crisp.

The portal back to Fandom would arrive after lunch, so now was time for packing, last-minute souvenir-shopping, or one final lift up the mountain to the wonderful land of snow-sports.

Or alternatively, freaking the heck out in your hotel room because Fandom knows no boundaries of distance or decency when it comes to attacking its current and former residents in their sleep to leave ladybits where manbits used to be, and manbits where... you get the picture.

So might the maid, if you forgot to leave the Do Not Disturb sign out.

It wasn't that obvious, was it?

...yeah, she reasoned, it probably was. She gave a faint smile, not about ready to apologize for liking being a girl, thank you very much. She might not have been satisfied with being a mermaid, but being a girl was something she'd always been certain about.

"It does help," she said. "I mean, even you, right? So at least I'm in good company."

"That's the spirit," Bruce said. "And this way you get to see the world from a slightly different perspective. You can learn a lot from something like that."

"Like how tightie whities make so much more sense now?" Ariel asked, somewhat pointedly, because a slightly different perspective was certainly one way to put it.

"You didn't think they made sense before?" Bruce - who believed in briefs over boxers - asked.

"Understanding a concept and actually experience it are very different, illuminating things."

"Well said," Bruce said. And then, because it had been in the back of his head, he had to ask, "Are you actually wearing briefs now, or are you still wearing what you brought?"

Look, it had to be asked.

And that was the terrible about today. Usually, Ariel could have played that off with a very coy answer, especially with Bruce, but currently, that was just...awkward.

On the other hand, she couldn't think of anything else to respond with, so she just went with the grin, the lifted eyebrow, and the, "Would you like to know?"

Bruce rested a hand on his chin - which was rather less imposing than he was used to, but he felt it worked well enough with the rest of his current face - as he gave the question some thought. "You don't pull that off nearly as well when you're a guy. But I am curious, so yes."

"Well," Ariel admitted, "I think, if I wasn't a guy, I would have actually offered to show you, but I am a guy, and if I wasn't a guy, you probably wouldn't have asked, so the whole thing left me not really knowing which way to go with that."

Pause.

"I'm still not telling you."

He had a pretty good guess. "Well, if you want to borrow any boy underwear, I still have some clean pairs that might be a little more comfortable if you're stuck with your own."

Yes, he was offering relative comfort to get a possible answer. He was mean like that.

Wait. Did this mean that, apparently, they were at a point in their relationship where they should be comfortable wearing each other's clothes? Clothes, she thought, because she couldn't actually fathom that couples got to the point of comfortably sharing underwear. It just wasn't something that would ever come up in a mermaid relationship.

Gosh. Switching genders complicated things so much.

"I...think I'm good," Ariel decided after eying Bruce a little.

"Um," she added, since now she felt obligated to reciprocate, "are you...okay with everything...in that department, too?"

"I went shopping. I'm good," Bruce said simply. Bruce Wayne prepared for EVERYTHING.

He was even wearing a bra now.

Sure, but was it made of seashells?

"I would have done that, but I spent all my shopping money on cute dresses..."

OH THE IRONY.

So she was still wearing her underwear! Well, that was answered. He was satisfied. "Funny how that works out," Bruce said. "If you really need something that fits a little better right now, I can pay for it. There's no need to suffer."

Clever, clever Bruce.

Ariel's nose wrinkled, realizing the gig was up, and considering the offer.

"Are you...sure?" she asked. "I could pay you back later..."

Of course, part of this now turned into a test, because, clearly, if he still offered to pay for it, that stood better for their status.

Bruce probably shouldn't mention that he also offered to buy something for Faramir. "You can if you really want, but there's no need to. I think I can afford it."

Well...

Ariel shrugged. "Well, if you're offering..."

"Do you want to go it alone, or would you like company?" Bruce asked.

"I'd always like your company, Bruce," Ariel said, "but you don't think that might be a little...you know...awkward?"

"Compared to spending all morning here, watching people come out of their rooms with clothes that don't fit right?" Bruce asked. "Besides, I still want to get out on the slopes one last time before we leave. I'm not going to let something like this stop me."

Yes, he pointed at his chest for emphasis on that.

Ariel took a second to compare the nasty spill she took this morning out of bed to the sorts of spills she was likely to take if she hit the slopes. Coming to a conclusion, she grinned, shifting in a fashion that was clearly more accustomed to a coyer female body.

"If you let me accompany you for a bit of skiing," she said, "I'll let you accompany me shopping."

"I want to spend some time on the advanced run, but I can do that a little later," Bruce said.

"Of course, just a little!" Ariel nodded. "I want to show you how much I was practicing, although my balance is all screwy today, so I don't know how good I'll even be."

"Don't worry. My balance will be off, too," Bruce said. "It'll be an interesting experience."

"Sounds goods, then. Really good!"
