Vail Ski Resort | Sunday Morning, 10/17

The Fandomites' last morning in Vail dawned cool and clear, the resort warm enough to get by with a light jacket, the slopes above frosty and crisp.

The portal back to Fandom would arrive after lunch, so now was time for packing, last-minute souvenir-shopping, or one final lift up the mountain to the wonderful land of snow-sports.

Or alternatively, freaking the heck out in your hotel room because Fandom knows no boundaries of distance or decency when it comes to attacking its current and former residents in their sleep to leave ladybits where manbits used to be, and manbits where... you get the picture.

So might the maid, if you forgot to leave the Do Not Disturb sign out.

Yeah, Tara was noticing that 'mood.'

"You don't seem too incredibly grossed out."

... not that she really had a lot of room to talk, given her own reactions as she shifted against Kennedy trying to get comfortable.

"Only 'cause I know it's you?" Which counted for a lot, since this had just gotten exponentially weirder. Oh, god. "And you're not exactly not being snuggly either. Stupid body, I swear I'm not usually this bad, am I?"

"Do you really want me to answer that?" Tara asked, slightly embarassed. "I mean, your equipment's usually a little different -- a lot different -- but...."

"I think you just did answer it," pointed out Kennedy, who was... really not at all embarrassed about it. "I think it's weirder that I'm having this reaction today."

She had to stop and think for a moment, looking Tara over. "Though... it's better than waking up with you gone. And you still have gorgeous eyes."

"We're all snuggled, I'm not wearing that much ...." Tara trailed off, because she was embarrassed. "I think some of it is probably just ph-physical."

She propped herself up on one elbow. "I can't even imagine waking up with you gone."

"I don't want to imagine that," Kennedy said with sudden fierceness, rolling to face Tara, and didn't that take some awkward maneuvering. "As it is, this week has sort of spoiled me for going back to the dorms, today's wacky notwithstanding."

She sighed and tucked one (still pretty toned, just less appealing, appearance-wise) arm under her head. "Upside, we should wake up back to normal tomorrow, right?"

"That's what happened last year," Tara confirmed. "But ... it's weird for it to hit off the island. Maybe it'll last longer than we expect."

"Oh, god," Kennedy groaned. "Don't go and say things like that. One day's weird enough and I had plans."

"Plans?" Tara asked, propping herself up on her elbow. "Like, plans besides 'we'll spend a long time in bed and then go home' kind of plans?"

"Well, no, okay, those were pretty much the extent of my plans," admitted Kennedy, biting her lip... oh god, did she have stubble? Already?

"I mean, it's not like there's anything wrong with them as plans," Tara said quickly. "Though the staying in bed part is a little less appealing."

"Just a little," Kennedy agreed. Okay, more than a little, but not because of Tara. "This is really, really sort of an anticlimactic way to end a good week. Memorable, but."

"So we'll pretend the weekend ended after my party last night," Tara decided. "This is just ... aftereffects."

She sat up the rest of the way. "Do we have clothes?"

"Yeah, I'm drawing the line at falling asleep last night. Clothes, yes. Clothes that are gonna fit? That's the question." Kennedy grimaced and sat up herself, paying more attention than she ever did to strategic bedsheet placement. "Might have to go shopping again, 'cause no way is my stuff going to fit me."

"Take me?" Tara requested. "I can fake it with sweatpants and stuff, but I'd like to look a little bit nicer than that."

Kennedy blinked at her. "You thought I wouldn't? Even if you look nice no matter what you wear," she added. "Usually, I mean-- um, which isn't to say you don't-- you're pretty good-looking, actually. For a guy."

And then she flopped back against the pillows. "Things I never thought I'd have to say for a thousand."

"I ... didn't really think about it that much?" Tara said. "And, uh. Thank you. You're pretty cute for a guy, too. All ... baby faced and stuff."

Awkward compliments were awkward.

"Thanks," Kennedy said, staring at her for a couple of long beats before, at a loss for anything else to say, she just started laughing. (Which was a weird, weird, unfamiliar sound, and kind of rumbly.)

"You know what? I'm choosing to go with the funny here. The other way lies insanity."

"I guess that's all we can do, right?" Tara said, laughing mostly because Kennedy was. "Laugh and be happy it'll wear off."

"Always does," Kennedy said with a casual confidence she was going to regret later. Maybe a lot later. "So we'll just take a rain check on the lazy day of snuggles until we feel like us again."

"Which won't be too long from now," Tara vowed, leaning in to kiss Kennedy's forehead. "And you still smell like you."

"Mmm." Kennedy closed her eyes and took a breath, smiling. "You too. Smell like you, I mean. So much for a bubble bath, but if we have shopping to do, I think a shower's in order here."

After a brief, re-evaluating pause--

"Maybe a cold one."
